On Wednesday 17th February 2021, Medicaid Cancer Foundation concluded a 3day hybrid training course for 68
healthcare workers on Visual Inspection with acetic acid and Thermal Ablation for early diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer. The 3day training aims to improve human resource for health started on Monday and ended on Wednesday 17th February 2021.
This training was part of various activities carried out by Medicaid Cancer Foundation to commemorate #worldcancerday2021.
The facilitators, Professor Oguntayo and Dr Taingson exposed the participants to the theoretical and practical knowledge of investigative approaches to the cervix for detection of precancerous signs.
To mark the closing of the training, Founder and CEO of the Foundation and First lady of Kebbi State H.E Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu was present.
Addressing the participants, Dr Bagudu said the training was triggered by a UNITAID funded donation of Thermal Ablation machines from CHAI Nigeria to her foundation.
“This training is not the first but this one comes as a refresher in light of the WHO’s global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030” So far, we have trained over 3000 health workers since inception 12 years ago.
“Kebbi has become a hallmark and the goal standard for cancer control in Nigeria, and even at the Federal level, Kebbi is ahead.
Her Excellency urged the participants to be ambassadors of the healthcare system that is being built.
Earlier speaking, The Commissioner of Health, Hon Jafar Muhammad said that the training which is in collaboration with the state ministry of health and primary health care agency, was initially intended for 50 people but due to the demand it surpassed the number which he said is a plus for the state’s health care.
The commissioner appreciated Her Excellency Dr Bagudu for always bringing good tidings to improve the healthcare service for the state.
Hon Jafar also lauded The Governor of Kebbi state H.E Sen Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for Providing the necessary facilities that will boost the improvement of healthcare in the state and by extension control the spread of cancer.
On behalf of the participants, Dr Fatima Aliyu Gulumbe and Hauwa Umar Maijidda expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to improve their knowledge. They thanked the First lady for being the ideal mother of the state. They commended the facilitators, the Medicaid team as well as the kebbi State Government.
Other dignitaries present at the closing ceremony were the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Alh Hassan Ibrahim Maigandi, the Director Medical Services, Dr Shehu Nuhu Koko, Barr. Hajiya Zahrau Gbashah, Professor M. A. Gulma amongst others.
The highlights of the program were the demonstration of the Thermal Ablation process for the dignitaries and presentation of gifts and certificates to participants.
