Community Policing: Bagudu stresses the need for involvement of stakeholders

In his candid resolve for the successful implementation of community Policing system, the Kebbi State Governor , Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu has again stressed the need for the active involvement of stakeholders in the system.

Governor Bagudu asserted that the concept and implementation of community Policing especially with the active involvement of local people remains the best and formidable way of ensuring security within our communities.

The governor made the assertion at the sensitization and awareness campaign organised by the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Kebbi State held at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

 

He said the Kebbi State Government under his watch has accorded maximum cooperation and support to security agencies in the state over the years since he assumed the mantle of leadership in order to bolster peace and security in the state.

The governor enumerated some of the measures and strategies already put in place by his administration to ensure success of community Policing in the state which included sponsoring of 336 candidates of Kebbi origin for training on community Policing at the Police College while another set of 450 would equally be sent for such training and sensitized on community Policing.

Bagudu also disclosed that Committees on Community Policing have been inauguarated by the government while sensitization from district down to ward level involving community leaders was on the pipeline.

He thanked and congratulated the Inspector General of Police, IGP Muhammad Adamu and security agencies for coming up with Community Policing .

‘ The analysis by IGP and other security agencies have found out that before it is more easier than now.

” Therefore , it is always good when you have a problem, you make some mistake and you amend ‘.

‘ I congratulate the leadership of the police and other security agencies for having the courage for realizing that community must be involved in keeping safety in the society ‘, he averred.

The governor was represented by Secretary to the State Government, Babale Umar Yauri .

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Agunbiade Oluyemi Lasore who has just been promoted to an AIG, in his welcome address, commended the Kebbi State Governor, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for his unwaivering support to the police and other security agencies which he said had placed the state at a vintage position of being the most peaceful state in the country with the lowest crime rate.

‘ The peace enjoyed in Kebbi is due to the purposeful leadership of governor Bagudu.

‘ The implementation of community Policing by IGP marked the beginning of Community Policing with stakeholders.

The CP expressed the hope that all the relevant stakeholders would play vital role in the implementation of community Policing in the state.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police rtd, DIG Hashima Salihu Argungu delivered a lead paper on Security saying that the security dialogue was apt and timely.

According to him, security served as the foundation of all human activities and development.

‘ Security is not only fundamental to the sustenence of life and property, but also bedrock of all human development ” , he said

He also highlighted on involvement of Community in the system, concept of good selection of Community Policing agents and the role of citizens as well as leaders in ensuring a successful Community Policing.

Stakeholders at the event offered their goodwill messages with the promise to live up to expectations in ensuring the success of Community Policing in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Babale Umar Yauri represented by the Special Adviser on Security, rtd Major, Garba Rabiu Kamba said the Kebbi State Government has done so much to support both security organizations and vigilante groups to strengthen the fight against crime and criminality in the state.

He added that the state government would streamline the activities of vigilante groups to ensure single command structure as well as to sensitize their activities to ensure law and order.

The SSG hoped that the sensitization will provide working strategy to address the rising phenomenon of insecurity in our localities, Kebbi State and Nigeria as a whole.

Some of stakeholders who delivered goodwill messages were the Deputy Speaker Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Buhari Aliero who represented the state legislators, representative of the emir of Gwandu, who spoke on behalf of the four emirates, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, Iyan Gwandu, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Muhammad Hassan Shalla , Chairman Birnin Kebbi Local Government, Alhaji Aminu Muhammad Birnin Kebbi , the Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Abubakar Bello Bandam and, Lawali Muhammad Augie, the State Commander of Vigilante Group of Nigeria .
