The Lagos State Waterways Authority LASWA has extended the water hyacinth clearing exercise to cover all state waterways zones.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, 12th November 2020, by Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, General Manager of the Agency, LASWA has completed the water hyacinth’s pegging down at ipakodo-Ikorodu terminal in readiness for actual clearing and removal of the stubborn weed from the water channel.

The GM stated that water hyacinth pegging exercise is currently ongoing simultaneously at Badore-Ajah and ijede-Ikorodu area of Lagos and will be followed by proper clearing and removal of the weed from ferry channels with a plan to extend the exercise to Badagry and Epe axis by next week.

The statement states, “The exercise is to run all through the year-end till the hyacinth is removed from all ferry routes on the State inland Waterways.”

Water hyacinth is a seasonal ocean weed that usually spread across the water channels, causing damage to boat engines and obstruction to the free flow of traffic on the Waterways.

The GM reassures all commuters of their safety while using the waterways and the state government’s commitment towards safeguarding lives and properties on the Waterways at all times.
